Effect of plasma scale length on multi MeV proton production by ultra short laser pulses

چکیده
The influence of plasma density scalelength on the production of MeV protons from thin foil targets irradiated at Iλ = 5x10Wcm has been studied. With an unperturbed foil, protons with energy > 20MeV were formed in exponential energy spectrum with a temperature 2.5± 0.3 MeV. When a plasma with a scalelength of 100μm was preformed on the back of the foil the maximum proton energy was reduced to < 5 MeV and the beam was essentially destroyed. The experimental results are consistent with an electrostatic accelerating mechanism that requires an ultra-short scalelength at the back of the target. متن کاملHigh-intensity laser-driven proton acceleration: influence of pulse contrast.
Proton acceleration from the interaction of ultra-short laser pulses with thin foil targets at intensities greater than 10(18) W cm(-2) is discussed. An overview of the physical processes giving rise to the generation of protons with multi-MeV energies, in well defined beams with excellent spatial quality, is presented. Specifically, the discussion centres on the influence of laser pulse contra...
متن کاملControl of proton energy in ultra-high intensity laser-matter interaction
Recent breakthroughs in short pulse laser technology resulted in (i) generation of ultrahigh intensity (2x10 W/cm) and (ii) ultra-high contrast (10) short pulses at the Hercules facility of the University of Michigan, which has created the possibility of exploring a new regime of ion acceleration – the regime of Directed Coulomb Explosion (DCE). In this regime of sufficiently high laser intensi...
متن کاملUltra-short laser-accelerated proton pulses have similar DNA-damaging effectiveness but produce less immediate nitroxidative stress than conventional proton beams
Ultra-short proton pulses originating from laser-plasma accelerators can provide instantaneous dose rates at least 10(7)-fold in excess of conventional, continuous proton beams. The impact of such extremely high proton dose rates on A549 human lung cancer cells was compared with conventionally accelerated protons and 90 keV X-rays. Between 0.2 and 2 Gy, the yield of DNA double strand breaks (fo...
